As the list of participants keeps growing and growing, we would like to allow you get better acquainted with the artists taking part in this year’s OGAE Second Chance Contest. First up, we’d like to introduce you to Carmell – Polish representative, flying the flag for the host country this year.
Carmell entered Polish national selection – Krajowe Eliminacje 2017 – with the song ‘Faces’, an emotional ballad she co-wrote with Marcin Kuczewski and Paweł Jurczak. She immediately caught the attention of fans and journalists alike, who put her amongst the favourites to win the selection. On the night of the live show, she performed as the 9th out of 10 acts.
During the voting Carmell received a moderate result from the jury who placed her in 6th place with 27 points – the highest score being 8 points from the singer Maria Sadowska and the composer Krzesimir Dębski, and the lowest score of 2 points from the composer Włodzimierz Pawlik. As disappointing as this result may have been for her, the viewers later saved the day for Carmell as she was announced the winner of the televote and awarded the top score of 10 points. With the points from the jury being added Carmell ended up in 3rd place, right behind Kasia Moś and Rafał Brzozowski.
Even though she didn’t get the ticket to Kiev, Carmell found her way into the hearts of Eurovision fans, including the members of OGAE Poland, who later chose her to represent the host country in OGAE Second Chance Contest 2017.
But who is Carmell? Her real name is Małgorzata Bernatowicz and she was always keen on singing. In 2010, she was a part of so-called Stereo Projekt, created by the Polish musician Marek Kościkiewicz, which released an album called ‘Air’. A year later Bernatowicz embarked on another project called MashMish – a duo with a pianist Marcin Kuczewski. They entered the second season of the talent show ‘Must Be The Music’, where they were very successful, reaching the Final 10.
In 2015, Bernatowicz took part in yet another talent show – this time the sixth season of ‘The Voice of Poland’. During the Blind Audition she performed in front of a very Eurovision jury panel, including two former Polish Eurovision entrants – Edyta Górniak (ESC 1994) and Piasek (ESC 2001), as well as Tomson and Baron – two members of the band Afromental, which participated in Polish national selection for Eurovision 2008, and Maria Sadowska – the jury member of Krajowe Eliminacje 2017. Even though Bernatowicz didn’t seem to be satisfied with her performance, both Edyta Górniak and Piasek turned around and Bernatowicz joined Górniak’s team.
After the successful performance during the Blind Audition her journey with the show was unfortunately cut short as she didn’t survive the Duel Round. This failure did not stop her however, as she emerged onto the stage of Krajowe Eliminacje 2017 as Carmell.
